Review:
Still doing all my homework each night, deciding which whiskies are to come into the country. That means more Boutiquey Whiskies from Master of Malt!
Tonight's whisky is a little special to me, a Strathmill. It's not special to me because it's a great whisky, but because this is the night that my wife has fallen for Community, only the greatest show ever made.
Strathmill is another distillery where the majority of the whisky produced goes straight into a blend, specifically the J & B. The spirit is described by Michael Jackson as 'The whisky world's answer to orange muscat. With dessert.'
Now when I talk about rare I mean silly rare. Only three official bottlings ever that I can find out about, a pair of casks for the distillery's centenary in 1992 and the 10 year old Flora & Fauna in 2001.
I honestly am finding out that a huge part of what I'm enjoying in trying all of these whiskies isn't just the nosing and drinking, but more the digging into the history of the distillery. It's been very enjoyable.
Well as I said Michael Jackson describes the spirit as sweet so I'm very keen to see if the whisky winds up being TOO sweet.
The nose is definitely sweet and floral: Lavender, honey suckle, honey, oodles of honey, green apples, pears, pear juice, and vanilla,
The palate is sweet with ooodles of cinnamon and nutmeg, then vanilla oatmeal develops, apples, apple crumble, and figs.
The finish is short, sweet and fruity with apples, strawberries, and oranges.
I found this whisky to be very enjoyable and easy drinking. I'll be honest, I was surprised that while it was sweet, it wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be from the descriptions of the distillery profile that I'd read.
Twelve bottles of this whisky will be coming into Australia, and they'll be retailing around the ball park of $175 a bottle. I will be picking up one for my collection so make it eleven bottles for the country.
